Trauma doesn’t always look like what you’d expect.
Sometimes it's flashbacks or nightmares. More often it's quieter than that. Many people we work with don't call what happened to them trauma at all. They just know something keeps getting in the way.
You react strongly to small things, then feel ashamed of how you reacted.
You're exhausted from always being on guard, even when nothing is wrong.
Your body tenses up before your mind knows why.
Relationships feel fine until they get close.
You keep telling yourself it wasn't that bad.
HOW WE WORK WITH TRAUMA
Talking about it is only one part of healing.
We start with steadiness, not your story.
You won't be asked to tell everything in your first session. Early work focuses on helping you feel grounded, so that when you do approach hard memories, you have somewhere solid to stand.
We start with steadiness, not your story.
Trauma can affect more than our thoughts and memories. It can shape how our nervous system responds to stress, safety, and connection. Several of our therapists draw on Somatic Experiencing and parts work, helping you notice what's happening inside in small, manageable doses instead of getting flooded.
We start with steadiness, not your story.
Seven of our therapists are trained in EMDR. It can be a powerful tool, and it's not right for everyone at every stage. We'll decide together when, and whether, it makes sense.

Questions people ask us
-
Not before you're ready, and sometimes not in detail at all. Approaches like EMDR and somatic work don't require you to retell every part of your story.
-
What matters is how an experience affected you, not how it compares to someone else's. Growing up feeling unsafe, unseen, or always on edge can shape you just as much as a single event.
-
Trauma therapy is about more than talking through difficult experiences. It's about understanding how those experiences have shaped the way you think, feel, relate to others, and experience safety in your own body.
At Iron City Counseling, our therapists use evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR, somatic-informed techniques, and parts work, to help you process distressing experiences and develop new ways of responding to life's challenges.
We don't believe healing requires you to repeatedly relive painful memories. Instead, we work collaboratively to help you build a greater sense of safety, understand your responses, and move toward meaningful, lasting change.
Your treatment will be tailored to your needs, with your therapist helping you navigate each step at a pace that supports your healing.
-
There is no one-size-fits-all timeline for healing from trauma. Everyone's experiences, needs, and goals are different, and the length of therapy depends on several factors, including the nature of your trauma, how it's impacting your daily life, and what you hope to gain from therapy.
Some individuals may notice meaningful progress within a few months, while others, particularly those working through complex or long-standing trauma, may benefit from longer-term support.
At Iron City Counseling, we believe trauma therapy isn't about rushing through painful experiences or following a predetermined timeline. It's about creating a safe, supportive space where healing can happen at a pace that feels manageable for you. Your therapist will regularly check in about your progress, goals, and needs, adjusting your treatment along the way.
Healing isn't a race, and there's no deadline for getting better. Our goal is to help you experience meaningful, lasting change, whatever that journey looks like for you.

Yes! Iron City Counseling accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), and many of our therapists are also in-network with other major insurance providers, including UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, and VIVA. Insurance acceptance varies by therapist and individual plan, so we encourage you to confirm your coverage before scheduling.
We also offer private pay options for clients who prefer not to use insurance or whose insurance is not accepted. Our administrative team can help you navigate your options and better understand what to expect financially before your first appointment.

IAbsolutely! Trauma therapy can be just as meaningful and effective through telehealth as it is in person. At Iron City Counseling, many of our therapists offer secure, confidential virtual sessions, allowing you to receive support from the comfort and privacy of your own space.
We offer several evidence-based approaches to trauma treatment, including EMDR, that can be adapted for virtual sessions. Your therapist will work with you to determine whether telehealth is a good fit for your needs, goals, and circumstances.
To participate in telehealth services, you must generally be physically located in Alabama at the time of your appointment, unless your therapist is authorized to practice in another state.
Whether we meet virtually or in person, our priority remains the same: creating a safe, supportive environment where you feel heard, understood, and empowered throughout your healing journey.

Absolutely! EMDR therapy doesn't have to happen in an office to be effective. Virtual EMDR is a research-supported approach to trauma treatment that allows you to experience the benefits of EMDR from the comfort and privacy of your own space.
At Iron City Counseling, our EMDR-trained therapists use specialized techniques and secure technology to provide effective, personalized trauma treatment through telehealth. Just like in-person EMDR, virtual sessions help your brain reprocess distressing memories, reduce emotional triggers, and develop healthier beliefs about yourself and your experiences.
For many clients, virtual EMDR offers additional benefits. Being in a familiar environment can create a greater sense of comfort and control, while eliminating travel time makes it easier to prioritize therapy within a busy schedule.
The healing happens through the therapeutic process, not the physical location. Our therapists will guide you through each phase of EMDR, helping you feel prepared, supported, and empowered throughout your treatment.
You don't have to put your life on hold or sit in a therapy office to begin healing. Meaningful change is possible, wherever you feel most comfortable.
